Why we need to use URL Shortener?

Why do people shorten their URL? Does it have to do anything with SEO?

I use shorter URL for micro blogging such as posting in Twitter and Facebook. It is very useful because it limits the number of characters being use and it hides also your domain. Short URL is very useful if you want to surprise your viewer and if you want your viewer be curious on what domain is hide in the short url.
